  • Steen, the vernacular used by the wizened farmers & winemakers for Chenin Blanc, is a true Cape heirloom variety purportedly planted in 1655 and a versatile vine which has served as the cornerstone of the wine industry at the tip of Africa for centuries. HoekSteen, originates from two low yield old bush vine plots in Stellenbosch grown in poor ferricrete rich soils within earshot of False Bay & the other upon a slope of decomposed granitic soils with vistas of Table Mountain, hand harvested, long cold fermentation, matured sur lie for 13 months and bottled unfined, unfiltered to preserve the essence of site. This rich ‘n bold Steen from a picture perfect Cape vintage with its heady floral aromatics, citrus, yellow fruit spectrum of flavours, chalky finish and lifted acidity is an ideal candidate for careful cellaring or decanting in its youth. Pair HoekSteen with roast fowl, fresh crustaceans & other denizens of the deep, soft fromage or simply serve as an aperitif while watching the setting sun.
  • “U-Velaphi?” – a conversational isiXhosa phrase to ascertain from whence one comes, where one was borne, your tribe and thus determining your character. U-Velaphi? Chardonnay is an ode to the African hands, soils & vintage which created this wine & represent its truly unique origin This vintage combines equal parts from two climats in Elgin planted to Clone CY95: one along the Applewaite lake with the vines rooted in Table Mountain sandstone over white clay, the other 15km away on a terraced South facing site rammed into Bokkeveld shale with yellow clay, quartz & flecks of ironstone. Elgin’s macro climate is cool with the climats we source fruit from decidedly ultra cool. Barrel Fermented & Matured."
